I had the pleasure of being joined\u00a0onstand\u00a0at IBTM World in November by\u00a0Hugo\u00a0Slimbrouck, a\u00a0formidable\u00a0past SITE president. Quite often, our topic of conversation turned to\u00a0SITE\u2019s 2023 Global Conference<\/a>, taking place this February in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>

In between questions and conversations with\u00a0members<\/a>\u00a0and other show attendees who were curious to learn more, what stands out for me from these conversations were the photos Hugo had \u2014 readily accessible \u2014 on his phone from past\u00a0conferences and other\u00a0SITE events (often spanning decades!), that he was eager to share with me and tell me the stories behind.<\/p>

It wasn\u2019t just the detailed Venetian costumes\u00a0from a past SITE event\u00a0that left an impression though.\u00a0I left IBTM, dwelling on how clearly Hugo\u2019s memories and the tangible reminders of them that he carries around in his pocket, in the form of the phone photos, reflect the\u00a0community\u00a0he\u2019s found \u2014 a theme I\u2019ve\u00a0now\u00a0been mulling on quite a bit the last couple of months.\u00a0<\/p>

I had another great conversation\u00a0while\u00a0in Barcelona with\u00a0Anthony Kelly,\u00a0a\u00a0SITE\u00a0stalwart\u00a0in his own right,\u00a0about how the \u201creal\u201d value of SITE is found in its\u00a0community.\u00a0Anthony\u2019s comments were incredibly similar to ones my own\u00a0SITE marketing\u00a0colleague Aoife McCrum has made about how the SITE Ireland community was a major part of how she found her footing early on\u00a0after entering the MICE industry.\u00a0<\/p>

Community, it\u2019s clear, is a shared value\u00a0for\u00a0many of us. But it\u2019s also a value that feels increasingly precarious and threatened.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Just look at the (quite frankly)\u00a0scary statistics about the rapid loss of friends and lack of deeper friendships. NYU Stern professor Scott Galloway, one of the business minds I turn to most frequently, has\u00a0written<\/a>\u00a0and presented quite a bit about the topic in recent months, linking it to larger workplace performance and employee behavior trends.<\/p>

I\u2019ve also been thinking back\u00a0more urgently\u00a0on research by\u00a0Robert Putnam, an\u00a0American political scientist.\u00a0Putnam\u00a0is the author of\u00a0\u201cBowling Alone,\u201d\u00a0which\u00a0argues\u00a0in part\u00a0that Americans are\u00a0growing\u00a0increasingly\u00a0isolated\u00a0as\u00a0\u201cthird space\u201d pockets of community like\u00a0\u2014\u00a0per the name of his book\u00a0\u2014\u00a0bowling leagues\u00a0are\u00a0disappearing from our social fabric\u00a0and harming our collective social capital.\u00a0<\/p>

Community, as\u00a0Galloway, Putnam,\u00a0and countless other experts have pointedly shared,\u00a0is a\u00a0vital\u00a0ingredient for\u00a0a successful, happy life, for many reasons\u00a0\u2014\u00a0reasons\u00a0that are\u00a0fulfilling both\u00a0personally and professionally.\u00a0<\/p>

I can\u2019t help but look at\u00a0this\u00a0research though,\u00a0hold it up against what\u2019s captured in\u00a0photos and memories like those\u00a0of\u00a0Hugo, Anthony, and Aoife, and wonder if\u00a0the MICE\u00a0industry\u2019s community-building golden days have since passed.<\/strong><\/p>

We\u00a0know\u00a0about the importance of liminal spaces in event design, and the serendipity that happens when you\u00a0stumble into a great conversation while waiting in the coffee line or for\u00a0a hotel\u00a0shuttle at the end of\u00a0a long conference\u00a0day. I\u2019ve certainly experienced it myself at least several times in different countries and the most random of settings throughout the last 12 months.\u00a0<\/p>

But I also felt\u00a0nostalgic again and again, after events in 2022,\u00a0for \u201canother time\u201d like the period reflected in Hugo\u2019s photos, or even in Aoife and Anthony\u2019s stories from when they started in the industry.\u00a0<\/p>

I can\u2019t help but wonder if\u00a0we\u2019ll continue forming, protecting, and growing\u00a0communities\u00a0the same ways\u00a0they did\u00a0in our industry \u2014 and around the events we plan and attend.\u00a0It sometimes feels\u00a0increasingly\u00a0daunting\u00a0to think about how my\u00a0millennial\u00a0peers and I can craft these kinds of spaces\u00a0generations before us did,\u00a0that are vital and nearly sacrosanct for growing careers, the industry itself, and making it a welcoming place for future generations.\u00a0<\/p>

The\u00a0exhaustion\u00a0grows, too, when thinking about the continued\u00a0spread\u00a0of technology that makes it easier to\u00a0work largely\u00a0in isolation, remain remote from one another, and even removes the \u201chuman element\u201d from what we do through automation and new AI\u00a0tools.\u00a0<\/p>

Still, I\u2019m nowhere near ready to call time and retreat so I\u2019m ending\u00a0this post\u00a0with a\u00a0more upbeat\u00a0challenge I hope\u00a0the industry\u00a0community I started cultivating in 2022, and look forward to strengthening in 2023,\u00a0will join me and help hold me accountable in.\u00a0<\/p>

Stealing a\u00a0final\u00a0line from the ever-fantastic inaugural SITE Young Leader board member\u00a0Heidi Dillon,\u00a0let\u2019s \u201cbe where our feet are\u201d this year \u2014 and commit to doing so as much as we can when we show up in our workplaces, at industry events, with our friends and family, and wherever else a new year takes us.\u00a0<\/p>

I look forward to making new meaningful connections and to deepening existing ones; I\u2019m\u00a0so incredibly grateful I\u2019ve found connection with immensely inspiring people in pretty much every corner of the planet. My life is richer for it, and I can\u2019t wait to see what re-committing to my community brings in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>
