{"id":3104,"date":"2022-06-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/siteglobal.com\/on-such-a-full-sea-are-we-now-afloat\/"},"modified":"2025-08-27T14:17:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-27T14:17:07","slug":"such-full-sea-are-we-now-afloat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/siteglobal.com\/blog\/such-full-sea-are-we-now-afloat\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018On such a full sea are we now afloat\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span><span>In <em>Julius Caesar<\/em>, Shakespeare talks about \u201ca tide in the affairs of men.\u201d He\u2019s referring to the swell of opportunity that presents itself at given moments of our lives. <\/span><\/span><\/h3>    <p><span><span>Hesitate, you miss it and then risk the voyage of your life being bound \u201cin shallows and miseries\u201d:<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"> <p><span><span><em>There is a tide in the affairs of men.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>  <p><span><span><em>Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>  <p><span><span><em>Omitted, all the voyage of their life<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>  <p><span><span><em>Is bound in shallows and in miseries.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>  <p><span><span><em>On such a full sea are we now afloat,<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>  <p><span><span><em>And we must take the current when it serves,<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>  <p><span><span><em>Or lose our ventures.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p> <\/blockquote>    <p><span><span>Shakespeare\u2019s powerful words have been twisting and turning in the windmills of my mind for the past month or so. It may be the obvious connection to our metier \u2014 voyages, journeys, fortunes and ventures \u2014 or, maybe the more tenuous reference to climate-related matters \u2014 floods, full seas \u2014 that has me thinking about sustainability and its place in the world of incentive travel professionals in a post pandemic world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Following an unthinkable two-year hiatus, our industry is cranking back into motion, with demand stronger than ever. The problem is this demand is pressing on a frail and fragile supply chain, greatly weakened by various versions of \u201cthe great resignation.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Many of our so called \u201clifers\u201d have cut and run into the outstretched arms of gleeful ICT HR managers weaving enchanted spells of better money, better hours and free gym memberships.<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Formerly well-resourced hotels and DMCs are left struggling to deliver their service standards with massively reduced staff numbers, comprised, often, of clueless new recruits \u2014 if they can get them! I witnessed it myself at a renowned five-star property in Barcelona when the only thing at breakfast that wasn\u2019t scrambled were the eggs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Now I fear that our worthy pandemic resolutions will simply be cast aside. If we\u2019re struggling to attract, pay and train staff, will we have time to \u2018build back better\u2019? Or consider work\/life balance? And what about the even bigger real and present danger? Climate change and all those issues that our industry categorises under the catch-all header of \u2018sustainability\u2019? How will all that play out?<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>There are, indeed, positive signs emerging in this regard from research. SITE Foundation\u2019s Corporate inSITEs, Edition 3, conducted in March\/April 2022 with a panel of 100 US corporations that use incentive travel, paints a very positive, robust picture of recovery. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>It demonstrates unequivocally that recovery is well underway for most corporations, with US domestic meetings and incentives already up and running and international incentives not so far behind.<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>More telling in relation to the focus of this article, however, is the increase in the relative importance of sustainable travel \u2014 up almost 20% on April 2021 when Edition 1 of Corporate inSITEs was conducted. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Granted, sustainable travel ranks well behind concerns such as contracts, risk management, health security and data but a 20% spike on its previous ranking augurs well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Even more encouraging are the results of preparatory work undertaken by SITE for the <a href=\"https:\/\/siteglobal.com\/dublin-manifesto\"><em>Dublin Manifesto<\/em><\/a>, the Society\u2019s latest treatise on the nature, purpose and direction of incentive travel. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span class=\"c-type__emphasis\"><strong>Fourteen themes were identified across a series of workshops and put before SITE\u2019s global community for ranking. The top three ranking themes were:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>    <ol class=\"wp-block-list\"> \t<li><span><span><strong>Social responsibility<\/strong> \u2013 ethics in business, accountability, staff empowerment, fair wages, climate justice, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion); ESG (environmental, social, governance); purposeful corporations<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t<li><span><span><strong>Sustainability<\/strong> \u2013 macro-issues: climate change, carbon emissions, destination selection; micro-issues: programme inclusions, F&amp;B, giving back, CSR<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t<li><span><span><strong>Health and wellbeing<\/strong> \u2013 stress, burnout; staff shortages, migration, and loss of talent; mental health; isolation; flexible hours and working conditions; #WFH; unreasonable work practices.<\/span><\/span><\/li> <\/ol>    <p><span><span>While stress and burnout do rank in the top three, it\u2019s encouraging to note that more global incentive travel professionals are concerned about social responsibility and sustainability.<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>On such a full sea are we now afloat, indeed.
