During SITE Global Conference in Dublin this April, World Experience Organization CEO James Wallman shared lots of ideas about how we can collectively design a better future for incentive travel. <\/span><\/span><\/h2>

We\u2019ve distilled three of the frameworks James presented during his keynote below, to help you explore ways to apply any or all of his ideas when crafting future incentive travel experiences.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Framework #1: STORIES<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

James shared research during his keynote that argues we still have lots to learn about how to make the most of our free time and how to design leisure experiences that improve quality of life. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

It\u2019s perhaps bit odd-sounding, but deciding how to use our leisure time effectively, James said, is not something we automatically know how to do but is a learned skill. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

Enter the STORIES framework, developed by James to serve as guideposts about what will make an experience actually enriching rather than leave you on empty. James recommends evaluating an experience based on: <\/span><\/span><\/p>

    \t
  • Story<\/em> \u2014 will this add to your \u201cpersonal journey,\u201d and also trigger positive emotions like happiness, resilience, and success?<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
  • Transformation<\/em> \u2014 it\u2019s in SITE\u2019s mission statement so hopefully this isn\u2019t news to anyone! Truly enriching experiences are ones with transformative potential, or opportunities to grow and develop in new and profound ways. <\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
  • Outside and offline<\/em> \u2014 also not news to our community: interacting face-to-face outside of Zoom, Google, or Microsoft Teams offers unparalleled benefits. <\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
  • Relationships<\/em> \u2014 are you able to make new connections or deepen existing ones? <\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
  • Intensity<\/em> \u2014 activities that encourage you to go deeper or tackle tougher challenges are often more rewarding. <\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
  • Extraordinary<\/em> \u2014 seek out (or design for) a \u201cpeak moment.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
  • Status and significance<\/em> \u2014 find opportunities to continue building your personal brand and enhancing your credibility. <\/span><\/span><\/li> <\/ul>

    Framework #2: BEE Rules<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

    Here, James argues, are the three most memorable elements to keep top of mind when designing an entire event experience: <\/span><\/span><\/p>

      \t
    • Beginnings <\/em>\u2014 what memories will people take away from the very start of your program, event, or activity? <\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
    • Extremes <\/em>\u2014 often those \u201cpeak moments\u201d from the STORIES framework above, that can occur throughout your program. <\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
    • Endings<\/em> \u2014 what\u2019s the last thing people will remember, and how will you ensure it\u2019s truly sticky?\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/li> <\/ul>

      Framework #3: DARG FUNG, to design for flow<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

      James ended his keynote with a short and simple framework showcasing the qualities needed to design an experience with \u201cflow.\u201d For James, \u201cflow experiences\u201d share these eight characteristics: <\/span><\/span><\/p>

      • Delete distractions<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
      • Active<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
      • Risk<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
      • Goals<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
      • Feedback<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
      • Unpredictable<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
      • New<\/span><\/span><\/li> \t
      • Complex<\/span><\/span><\/li> <\/ul>
