Some are cause for mass groans and grumbles: many of us would be happy to never have to use terms like \u201cunprecedented\u201d and \u201cforce majeure\u201d again. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>But one of the more compelling buzzwords introduced thanks to COVID is \u201clanguishing.\u201d The word was the subject of the most-read New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/19\/well\/mind\/covid-mental-health-languishing.html\">article<\/a> in 2021, prompting the Times to label it \u201cthe dominant emotion of 2021.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Languishing isn\u2019t limited to our personal lives, but can also surface in our workplaces \u2014 unfortunately in bleak ways. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>\u201cThe term\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/3090197\">languishing<\/a> describe[s] \u2018the absence of feeling good about your life,\u2019\u201d says a Harvard Business Review (HBR) <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/09\/do-you-feel-a-lack-of-meaning-at-work-you-could-be-languishing?utm_medium=email&amp&utm_source=newsletter_weekly&amp&utm_campaign=ascend_not_activesubs&amp&deliveryName=DM176817\">article<\/a> on the topic, also noting, \u201cWhen you\u2019re languishing, you feel a lack of meaning and a desire to \u2018fit in\u2019 emotionally.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Languishing may seem like odd word to connect to incentive travel given that incentives are linked to high performance and rewards. But after multiple years of working through a pandemic, it\u2019s fair to assume that even top performers might be experiencing a bit of burnout. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span><span><strong><span class=\"c-type__emphasis\">Pause for reflections and celebrations<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>    <p><span><span>Consider advice at the heart of the HBR article that one of the best ways for an employee to combat languishing is to reflect on their path, successes, and mission and identify personal drivers of long-term success \u2014 things like happiness, achievement, significance, and legacy. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>If that list sounds familiar, it\u2019s for good reason: a good incentive program can deliver these drivers in spades. Incentive travel instills a sense of pride, shows employees how they\u2019ve made a positive impact, and aligns with individuals\u2019 values and accomplishments. Ensure these remain key goals of a program, and you\u2019ll have already taken a solid step toward negating languishing symptoms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span><span><strong><span class=\"c-type__emphasis\">Craft solid working relationships<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>    <p><span><span>HBR also advises languishers to try three different <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/09\/do-you-feel-a-lack-of-meaning-at-work-you-could-be-languishing?utm_medium=email&amp&utm_source=newsletter_weekly&amp&utm_campaign=ascend_not_activesubs&amp&deliveryName=DM176817\">\u201cjob crafting\u201d strategies<\/a> to connect in with their work and rediscover what\u2019s (at least somewhat) enjoyable or fulfilling about it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>One of these strategies is \u201crelational crafting,\u201d explained by HBR as \u201ccreating an emotional connection with the people around you and maybe even strengthening your current relationships. Basically, you improve your job by altering who you interact with.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>Relational crafting, it turns out, is at the heart of incentive travel and one of its great unlocks. Making relational crafting \u2014 be it with senior leaders, other colleagues, or even personal travel companions \u2014 a central part of a program\u2019s design can be a fast-track way to increase joy, encourage future performance, and combat languishing symptoms long after leaving an incentive destination. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>    <h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span><span><strong><span class=\"c-type__emphasis\">Satisfaction increasingly crucial for success<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/h3>    <p><span><span>\u201cIn these times\u201d (another phrase many of us groan at!), employee wellbeing has rightfully taken on increased importance, as managers realize that a physically and mentally satisfied workforce is a prerequisite to a productive one. <\/span><\/span><\/p>    <p><span><span>With languishing currently one of the biggest socio-emotional crises impacting workplaces, well-designed incentive travel can help address its symptoms or even prevent it in the first place \u2014 as long as we get creative and dig deeper into its strategic uses. <\/span><\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COVID-19 has added \u2014 or resurfaced \u2014 many new phrases into our daily vocabularies.
