From Buckingham Palace to leading global recognition programs<\/strong><\/h2>

Paul Miller reflects on three decades of rewarding excellence, shaping the incentive travel industry, and the lessons that continue to inspire him today.

Recently, we had the pleasure of speaking with Paul Miller, a true veteran of the incentive travel world. Over the past 30 years, Paul\u2019s career has taken him from the halls of Buckingham Palace to leading global initiatives with SITE, helping to craft unforgettable experiences for employees around the world. In this conversation, he shares the lessons he\u2019s learned, the milestones that have shaped his journey, and his thoughts on the evolving future of incentive travel.<\/p>

Q: What first drew you to the incentive travel industry, and what has kept you passionate about it over the past 30 years?<\/strong> <\/h4>

A: Like many of us, I stumbled upon it rather unexpectedly. My career began with my first full-time job at Buckingham Palace, where I served as an underbutler. It was during this time that I discovered my organizational skills, patience, and discipline. However, I was still unsure of how to best utilize these skills. <\/p>

After my royal service, I had the opportunity to work abroad in Switzerland as a butler for a Swiss banker. This experience truly solidified my passion for excellence and high standards. Around that time, my partner, who is now my dear wife, was working in hotels in London. When I decided to return to the UK, she introduced me to the group travel market sector and the DMC (Destination Management Company) world. <\/p>

Eager to start a new chapter, I applied to all the DMC companies I could find and landed a job in the late ’80s. Since then, I have never looked back and have been fully immersed in the world of incentive travel. It has been an incredible journey, and I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities that have shaped my career. <\/p>

Q: Looking back, how have both the incentive travel industry and the SITE community evolved, and what core elements have remained constant throughout your career?<\/strong> <\/h4>

A: Our industry has evolved in many ways partly due to the advancement of technology. I recall the days when\u00a0cellphones\u00a0were non-existent, and yet, we managed to navigate and thrive in our field. Despite further technological leaps, one constant has\u00a0remained\u00a0steadfast: the principle of incentive travel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Reward and recognition through travel have consistently proven to be a key driver for employee performance. This principle has stood the test of time and continues to be as relevant today as it was when I first started. The passion and drive within the SITE community have always been palpable. Just like us today, the community back then was relentless in challenging the status quo, questioning norms, and raising the bar. Our collective pursuit of discovering new destinations and curating unique travel experiences has always been at the heart of what we do. We embrace this passion and dedication as we push the boundaries of incentive travel further. Our commitment to finding innovative ways to reward and recognize employees through exceptional travel experiences is what sets us apart. Together, we continue to drive performance and create unforgettable memories. <\/p>

Q: How has your 25-year involvement with SITE influenced your professional journey, and is there a particular experience or connection that stands out?<\/strong> <\/h4>

A: My journey with SITE has been truly remarkable, and it all began after an inspiring conversation with the SITE CEO shortly after becoming a member in 1999. At that time, the SITE GB Chapter was on the brink of dissolution, and I felt compelled to take action. I rallied a group of like-minded individuals and together, we formed a new chapter board. Our efforts paid off, and within just a year, we grew the chapter from 15 members to an impressive 140! Since then, the GB Chapter has flourished, reaching its largest membership ever and engaging in incredible work. <\/p>

My SITE journey started at the chapter level, just as it does for many others. I had the privilege of serving as the GB Chapter President, and my involvement only deepened from there. I joined the SITE Industry Council, chaired the Global Conference, served on the Board of Directors, and eventually took on the role of SITE Global President. <\/p>

\u202fThroughout this amazing journey, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people who have influenced my decision-making and served as mentors. These connections and the strong sense of community within SITE have been instrumental in shaping my experiences and successes. <\/p>

Q: What key lessons have you learned along the way, and what advice would you offer to someone just starting out in incentive travel today?<\/strong> <\/h4>

A: The first lesson for me is the importance of listening. Taking the time to hear from others and learning from their experiences can greatly help us grow and make more informed decisions.  <\/p>

Equally important to me is the lesson of questioning. If we don’t ask questions, we miss out on valuable answers and the opportunity to find solutions. Both of these practices are crucial for our personal and professional development as well as the progression of our industry. <\/p>

My advice to anyone starting their professional career within incentive travel is to get involved with SITE. You will not regret it and I believe now more than ever is an opportune time to begin that journey. There are numerous opportunities to get involved, make connections, grow and develop within this dynamic field.  <\/p>

Q: As you reflect on these milestones, what excites you most about the future of incentive travel and the role SITE will continue to play?<\/strong> <\/h4>

A: What excites me the most about our industry is that it never stands still. We are in a constant state of evolution, driven by the unceasing demand for once-in-a-lifetime experiences. It is this dynamic nature that keeps our work so exhilarating and fulfilling. As a Past President of SITE Global, I am incredibly proud to have been part of this ongoing evolution, witnessing firsthand how our industry adapts and transforms to meet new challenges and opportunities. <\/p>
